Applied Spectra, Inc. Celebrates its 5th Anniversary

California company has delivered laser-based, environmentally friendly elemental analysis systems since 2004

Fremont, Calif. – Oct. 14, 2009 — Applied Spectra, Inc., a leading provider of laser-based test equipment for elemental chemical analysis, celebrates its 5th anniversary this month. Since its inception at the UC Berkeley incubator facility, the company has assembled a highly qualified team of scientists and engineers committed to creating automated products that harness the latest in laser ablation analysis techniques. Laser ablation is a new green technology for rapid chemical analysis that eliminates traditional sample preparation and consumables, and generates no waste products.

“Over the last five years, Applied Spectra has established itself as the most qualified company to support customers with laser-based chemical analysis tools and services,” said Dr. Richard Russo, Ph.D., President and Founder of ASI. “I attribute our success to the commitment and dedication of the staff and the tremendous potential of this technology for changing the way the world does chemistry.”

Applied Spectra's Team

Applied Spectra is expanding. In January, 2006 they opened an application laboratory in Fremont, California. The company has been awarded eight SBIR/STTR contracts from the US Army, US Air Force and NASA. Applied Spectra recently established a sister company, A3 Technologies, LLC, in Aberdeen, Maryland to serve its many customers in the defense and security industries.

In late 2007, the company launched its first commercial product — the RT100-HP — based on Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) technology. In 2009, the company expanded its product line with four additional LIBS systems designed for a wide variety of applications.

“Since 2004 Applied Spectra has successfully transformed itself from a start-up, analytical research company to a provider of total elemental solutions based on laser ablation technology,” stated Dr. Jong Yoo, Ph.D., Vice President of Technology Development. “It has been extremely rewarding to see commercial customers adopt our LIBS solutions and reap the benefits of clean, fast chemical analysis that requires no sample preparation. We are committed to delivering innovative, elemental solutions to the market in the coming years.”
